I went to St. Mary’s with Ed. One of the most intelligent people I ever met. I lost track of him after I visited with him at Wisconsin when I was taking my USAF flight physical at Truax in 1965. Ed was a joy to know. May he Rest In Peace.

Ed and I worked together at Kinkos in Ventura and Dalas. We kept in contact over the years. Ed was always approachable and patient, humble and kind. What impressed me the most is Ed’s endless pursuit of education. He was always learning and transforming himself in new ways. Ed, you’re a very special person and the world is less without you.

Ed Purcell was my father’s youngest brother, my Uncle Ed. He was a tremendously bright, hard-working and earnest person. My early memories of Ed were from the enormous house that my grandparents (Stephen and Geraldine) had in Canton, Ohio, including a Montessori type school that they operated for years. I was a young kid, perhaps 5 or so, and Ed had an amazing collection of aircraft and ship models, all meticulously built, and a huge collection of books. I was really impressed (intimidated?) by Ed, it seemed to me that he was already an adult at that time, rather than a teenager and a student. Later when he had his PhD and returned from trips to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, his stories and observations were legend. When our family moved to the West coast, Ed and Cathy lived in the LA area and we (my wife Tana and I) got to host them for a visit to San Diego, along with Sean and Kevin, when they were young boys. Our deepest condolences go out to Sean, Kevin, and Chrissy and to the grandchildren. We hope to be able to see you all and reconnect perhaps in California?
With love,
Stephen and Tana Purcell

Hey Ed,
It's been almost a week since I've heard of your passing, and work just hasn't been the same without you. I wish I could've expressed my appreciation for all the help and mentorship you've given me when I was first starting out at Greenzone. Observing your day-to-day passion, dedication, and selflessness has made me a better Data Scientist and person. You're not here, but you'll always be someone I look up to. I'm sorry we never got a chance to hang out and watch soccer and bike together. I miss you man.

Please know I am praying for your family during this difficult time. We (GreenZone/KYM) were lucky to have Ed as a member of our team. I personally worked with Ed on a few initiatives and was always impressed by his wealth of knowledge. He was a true educator when it came to helping support development of mission critical products for the federal government and helping develop team members.
I pray that you find comfort in the memories that you shared with your father. I know the team at GreenZone/KYM will.
Sending thoughts and prayers,
Cortney

They say that a father's guiding hand always sits on the shoulder of his children. Dear Sean, Kevin, Chrissy, I am sorry for your loss. I didn't get a chance to meet with Ed ever, but was very much impressed at the way he led a king-size life!
And, although he may be in a better place, losing such a strong figure in life is one of the hardest things many of us will go through. My dad also passed away a few months back and I suggest that you all make sure to retell how your father lived, how he smiled, and how he loved serving his community.
May you all speak of him not with tears, but with the wonderful memories of the times he spent with each of you.

Sean, Kevin, Chrissy,
I am so sorry for your loss but was always so impressed with your father - his mastery of cutting edge technology that he picked up years beyond me is astounding and truly an inspiration.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything.
All the best over the next days, weeks, and months.
Ted Langhoff (KYM)

My last time seeing Ed, was at dinner at the Wild Tomato in Cabin John, MD on July 5. He had what I think was one of his favorites, fish tacos. Near the end of visiting we talked about biking and one of the last things he said was, it's all about the downhill as it makes me feel like a kid. Some of us who bike can relate, as it often makes you smile! But of course you have to do the uphill, to get the downhill. He worked at it, as he did other things, and loved it!
I'll miss him and his good cheer,
Mike Brown
