As soon as I moved back to the Washington, DC metro area in 2005, I join the former Capitol Hill Civil War Roundtable.
The first person I met was John Ed.
We maintained a friendship over the years.
His passion for history and his command of the English language always made him a pleasure to speak with. Whether on Capitol Hill or at the National Press Club, John Ed was always a gracious host and the center of things.
He was one of those people you will never forget. I’m sorry for his passing but I’m so happy I got to know him. RIP John Ed.

I am saddened to find out out about dear John Ed's death. He and I worked together supporting the Capitol Hill Civil War Round Table of which he was a long-time member and officer. For several years he rode with me to our monthly meetings. We would reminisce about long-ago years of Arlington and Washington, DC history, often bemoaning the decline of architecture and institutions of recent decades. More important were our many lively conversations about local, national, and military history, so interesting and enjoyable! I admired his clear religious faith, and that he was a good husband to his wife Doris. Requiescat In Pace, Victoria Kennedy

How sorry we are about the death of dear Jack, and how sorry we are that we learned of his death too late to attend his funeral Mass. We first knew him as a fellow parishioner of St. Agnes and later as a friendly neighbor who enjoyed offering humorous and meaningful conversations as well as friendly waves from his porch. The Waverly Hills neighborhood has lost a treasure. The curve on Utah Street won't be the same without him.
We send our condolences and prayers to his family.

Jack was always such a kind and colorful neighbor, and very supportive of our family when my aunt passed away. He also was a friendly face and kind neighbor to Sidney and Florida Eickhoff, our aunt and uncle, who lived across the street from him. God rest his soul, we
miss you Jack.
Your friend,
William Ballou

I learned of John's death last evening from a friend. I am so sorry to have missed his funeral. May he rest in peace. I will remember him fondly as a long-time member of the Downtown Washington Serra Club. He always had a wonderful story to tell or a history lesson to impart. His devout faith and love of the Lord was an inspiration to us all. My prayers are for his soul and with your family. My sympathy to you on the death of one we all held dear.
Alice Middleton, President, Downtown Washington Serra Club

Although we were only neighbors of John’s for a brief time, we so enjoyed our chats. Whether it was learning about the neighborhood in his youth or his many adventures at the buffet table, it was always a delight to hear the eloquent tales. He definitely had the “effervescence of eternity.” Working in the yard has lost its greatest pleasure. Julie, Dan, and Dominic Rosenbaum

May you Rest In Peace our neighborhood angel, known to our family as Mr. John. We delighted in your company and your funny stories. You made us smile every time we went past your house with your joyful waving. Your faith was an inspiration to us and you always had wisdom to share. Our favorite saying of yours is "Your crosses are a symphony of circumstances designed by God just for you to refine the pearl inside of you that is eternity." You inspired all of us to deeply desire eternity. As your friend Nicole said, "well done Mr. John! Your symphony awaits!" We will miss you so much while rejoicing in your eternal bliss.
