Dr. Harry, a long-time stalwart of NASOH, gentleman, and consumate naval historian, and I will miss him greatly. One of my first meetings of him was at a SMH panel where he was the commentator. I was working on a biography of Thomas ap Catesby Jones and offered a paper on his seizure of Monterey, California, as the first implementation of the Monroe Doctrine. Harry chewed me up in comments; I gave it right back to him as I had been deep in the primary sources. The chair Jim Bradford ended the session, saying that this was the type of spirited debate the profession was missing. Being young at the time, I was unsure what to expect after the session. Harry approached me with kindness and was very complimentary. He commented about how I have ably defended my thesis and afterwards we went for a drink/coffee. That episode began a long assoication that I will miss dearly. He was kind, generous, and geninuely funny.

We have been missing Harold at the NASOH meetings lately and now are saddened by the news of his passing.
For decades so many of us learned from him and were encouraged by him, as an example of a warm and friendly exacting historian. I am proud to have called him a friend and colleague.
—Warren Riess, U. of Maine, past president of NASOH

It was always a pleasure when Dr. Langley visited the Photo Studio at NMAH. He always took the time to explain the museum object’s history to the photographers. Many of us would stop and gather around the object cart to hear Dr. Langley’s words. His warmth, his kindness, and appreciative manner will always be remembered. Best wishes and prayers for the Langley family, his friends and colleagues .
