John lived across the street from me at Idylwood and Hurst street for 6 years and was a wonderful neighbor. I have so many “Kornutick” stories I still relay to family and friends. I wondered if he still had the twenty pound bathrobe that had everything sewn on to it from a U-Haul blanket patch, to potholders and a pair of underwear that covered the frayed patches. He was a man of many projects with a set of double hedges around the property (he knew the road would be widened eventually and was protecting his privacy), the storage shed and cabinetry made from Don Beyer Volvo pallet wood and a zillion nails, the homemade mud bricks for the retaining walls, the sifted rocks from the dug up dirt (to make the bricks) that he put in the driveway, and the old dead oak tree that took revenge by burning up several chain saws. If he was busy, he had no qualms saying “Okay, you can go now” . I appreciated his bluntness and he made me feel secure that if I ever had a problem, he was there to help. He also was very sweet with my grandmother who lived next door. When she died, he raked leaves in front of the house to keep an eye on everything when we were at the service. I wish I could do the same for him now. I had only occasional contact once I married Glenn and moved away, but would get an e-mail from time to time. John was One -of-a-kind and I will miss his not being in the world. He made my life richer for having known him. Best wishes to all of his friends and family who remain in the area.
