Obituary of George I. Malinin

George I. Malinin, 94, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2023, in Alexandria, Virginia, after a long and full life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Adela J. (Alexander) Malinin, and his parents Ivan and Olga (Senitzkaya) Malinin. He is survived by his brother Theodore I. Malinin (Dorothy), four nieces and nephews – Ellen (Brad), Alexander (Laura), Catherine (John), and Michael (Krista) – numerous grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews, and many friends.

George was born in Krasnodar, Russia, on September 19, 1929, emigrated to this country in his youth, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He served as a parachute jumper in the U.S. Air Force.

He received his Bachelor of Science from Concord College, his Master of Science from George Washington University, and his doctorate from Catholic University. He was a Research Professor in the Physics Department at Georgetown University and published many research papers, including a voluminous publication on the histochemistry of cartilage and cartilage dynamics.

He was a brilliant chess player, devoured books in three different languages, and loved all animals. He adored his many grand-nieces and nephews and kept pictures of them on the shelf by his bed. He was a regular morning visitor to St. Elmo’s Coffee Shop in Alexandria, where he made many friends and knew all their dogs by name.

Funeral service will take place at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, or the Native American Rights Fund.
