Obituary of Trudy Cooke
Trudy Cooke died peacefully in her sleep at Greenspring Senior Living Community in Springfield, Virginia, on Thursday, October 12, 2023. She was 94.
Born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Trudy Karnes moved to the Washington, DC area when her father accepted a job at the Department of Agriculture. A committed member of the Roman Catholic Church, she loved to sing in the choir at St. Agnes Catholic Church. After graduating from high school, Miss Karnes worked as a secretary at First Virginia Bank on Old Dominion Dr. in Arlington.
She met her future husband Arthur Roy Cooke in September of 1949, when a neighbor invited her over for a double date with a couple soldiers stationed at Ft. Myer. By all accounts it was love at first sight for Private Cooke.
Trudy and Art were married at St. Agnes Catholic Church on May 10, 1951, and moved to Ft. Monmouth, NJ, until Art was honorably discharged as a Sargent in 1952. The couple returned to Arlington, then moved to McLean, where they lived for 53 years until Art’s death in late 2011.
Trudy moved to Greenspring in July 2012 where she's made many friends, and rekindled old friendships from St. Agnes.
Trudy is survived by her son Kevin, of West Springfield, VA; daughter Diane of Rye, NY, many nieces and nephews and the innumerable friends she’s made while at Greenspring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 17, at 11AM.
