Emma Higgins

Obituary of Emma Jane Higgins

Mrs. Emma Higgins departed her earthly life at MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Friday, July 7, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born on July 22, 1939, in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Emma was the last survivor of fourteen children born to Limas and Canarie Gee.

Emma relocated to Washington, DC at an early age and attended the District of Columbia Public Schools. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School.

Mrs. Higgins accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, Open Door Baptist Church and Michigan Park Christian Church, throughout the years. More recently, she garnered her spiritual strength through daily devotional readings, and her bible. Emma loved the Lord!

Before retiring, Emma worked as an Executive Housekeeping Manager at New Hampshire Suites Hotel in Washington, DC.

Being the last surviving sibling out of fourteen brothers and sisters, Aunt Emma loved her family. She had a close and intimate relationship with all of her nieces and nephews. She remembered all their birthdays and made it a point to call and share words of wisdom and humorous insight on their special day. She even checked in on everyone on holidays and anniversaries. Aunt Emma was caring and left each one of them laughing and smiling at the end of any given conversation. She was not only an aunt, but in some cases, a mother figure to her nieces and nephews. She absolutely adored her family, and she will be greatly missed by all.

Mr. Higgins preceded her in death. Emma is survived by her loving daughter Nellie (“Toie”) Graham, and her loving son-in-law John of Washington, DC, her fury grand pup Chloe, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
