Obituary of Frances S. Lumpkin

Frances S. Lumpkin, of Fairfax City, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2013 at the age of 91. She was born in Newport News on March 24, 1922 to Ernest Hartwell Shumate and Blanche Mae Fuqua. Mr. Shumate married Katherine Oliver after the death of his wife Blanche; Katherine lovingly raised Frances and her brothers, alongside her son. Frances married John T. Lumpkin, whom she met while working at the Newport News shipyard during World War II. After dedicating herself to raising their four children, she went to work in Personnel Management at George Mason University. She later retired to accompany her husband on his IBM assignment in Brussels, Belgium where they enjoyed many European adventures. Mrs. Lumpkin was predeceased by her parents, her husband and their son Michael, her brother Ernest, and her brother Robert. She is survived by her brother John of Williamsburg, Va., and three daughters, Diane of Burke, Va., Susan of Alexandria, Va., and Vicki of Alexandria, Va. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, in Fairfax, Va, on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 12 noon. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Frances’ name to “Smile Train”.
