Obituary of Catherine Maria Johnson

Catherine Maria Whiteman Johnson died on October 23, 2013 following surgical complications. She is survived by her two children, Juanita Johnson and Franklin Johnson; her grandchildren: Jessica Carter Caudill, Damen Carter, Nigel Carter, Nicholas Johnson, Catherine Rose Johnson, and Veronica Johnson; her great-grandchildren: Jasmine Slater and Jada Caudill, and her siblings: Harold Whiteman, Lionel Whiteman, Joslyn Whiteman, Terrence Whiteman, Winston Whiteman, Patricia “Shirley” Whiteman, Valentine Whiteman, Christine Bartholomew, Martin Whiteman, Pearl Wickham, Gloria Williams, and Veeda Whiteman, as well as Jacob Phillips, Jermaine Phillips, and Joan Livingstone Whiteman. She is also survived by numerous well-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Rose Edwina Whiteman. Mrs. Johnson was born in Grenada, West Indies on July 11, 1935. She was best known for her love of gardening and as a child, she wanted to become a farmer. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed using fresh fruit and vegetables grown in her garden. Towards the end of her life, she especially enjoyed spending time with her sister, Shirley, also known as “Pat”, in Pat’s backyard helping with the gardening. She was an avid fan of showtunes, musicals, and old “shoot’em up westerns. There was no person in her life that she did not touch with her kindness and caring. Her hearty laughter and ready smile will be missed by all who loved and knew her. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 6, from 4-8 PM at Advent Funeral Home, 9013 Annapolis Rd., Lanham Maryland. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 7301 Annapolis Rd., Landover Hills, Maryland.
