Obituary of Jeanette Barbara Malec

Jeanette Barbara Malec, born Jeanette Barbara Madej on August 3, 1920 in South Hadley, Massachusetts, passed away quietly in her sleep on January 2, 2014 in Falls Church, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Frank, mother Julia, father Ferdinand, and sisters Stella and Melanie. She is survived by a brother, Eugene, of Kingston, New Hampshire, her children, Diana MacKinnell of Arlington, Virginia, Christina Lehman of Elysburg, Pennsylvania, Lucia Malon (and husband Louis) of Blackstone, Virginia, Rebecca Goodman (and husband David) of Princeton, New Jersey, Richard Malec (and wife Patricia) of Goode, Virginia and Greensboro, North Carolina, close family friend, Cynthia Todd of Arlington, Virginia, 8 grandchildren, Jennifer Saunders, Melissa and Michael Elza, Andrew and Alex Goodman, and Ryan, Kyle, and Caroline Malec, and 2 great-grandchildren, John Michael and Lorelai Elza. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, Jeanette worked for a number of years as director of the School of Medical Technology at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts where the family lived from 1964 until 1979. In retirement, she and husband Walter moved to Westminster, Maryland. After his death in 1980, she remained there until 1995 when she began residing with son Richard’s family in Goode, Virginia, and then with daughter Diana in Arlington, VA. In 2010 she became a resident of the Powhatan Nursing Home in Falls Church. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Westminster and Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Bedford, Virginia. Arrangements are being handled by Advent Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Falls Church. A private memorial service will be held at a date and time yet to be determined. Burial will be in Westminster, Maryland where husband Walter rests.
