Elsie, thank you very much for your kind and comforting words about the loss of my mom. She appreciated your keeping in touch with her throughout the years and had a lot of fun opening those “care packages” that you sent her. Thank you for continuing to keep her in the loop about activities of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. The “greatest generation” is dwindling in numbers, but we certainly won’t ever forget them.

I know that we all have our own precious memories of Grandma (Dorothy) Hedetniemi. Anyone who knew her can relate to what a special woman she was. In fact I firmly believe that she single-handedly kept our different family groups in touch with each other just by sharing her amazing amount of knowledge of who was doing what…when …and where. I cannot begin to imagine what my life will be like without her. I love you Grandma.

Dorothy Hedetniemi was truly a modern day matriarch of a large and loving family…the last of a dwindling generation. Always kind, helpful, gracious and supportive, no matter the circumstances, she will be sorely missed by us all. However, despite questions in the past, after an experience when my own mother passed on numerous years ago, I firmly believe they are all “up there” and most especially happy, and we’ll join them in our own time. Thank you, “Mrs H” for your unwavering attention and love for all of us!

I’m one of the twenty-one people who were fortunate enough to have had Dorothy as our grandmother. She introduced me to the joy of orange cupcakes, the fun of advent calendars, and I knew I could always count on her to remember my birthday. Over the last few years, my professional life has come to revolve almost entirely around keeping track of records and details. As Dorothy was always able to understand and remember every branch of our complicated family tree – long before the internet was a thing – I’m starting to think I may have inherited some of those skills from her. So thanks for that, Grandma. And thanks for my mom. And all the cupcakes. I’m glad the end was relatively peaceful.
