Obituary of Roger Ng

Roger Pow-Hing Ng Ying Sheung 21 June, 1936 – 29 December, 2014 On Monday, December 29th, Roger Ngleft us. He was 78 years old and is survived by his beloved wife Amy and their five children; Kenny, Camille, Magny, Silicia, Bruce, and seven grandchildren. Ah Maye, as he was known to family and friends, was born to Hakka Chinese immigrants. During his studies, he quickly distinguished himself for his gregariousness and contagious energy. He studied at the Royal College of Curepipe and was the first Chinese Mauritian at the College of Agriculture. He started his professional career as an Agronomist at the Rose Belle Sugar Estate, and in 1961 he joined the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute where he steadily rose through the ranks to become the Head of Field Experimentation Services. During an international search by the German Technical International Cooperation Agency in 1984, he was chosen to develop the sugarcane industry in Morocco. He proved so adept at this complex task that his contract was renewed for a total of nine years. At the end of his contract, the family settled near Washington, DC and Roger obtained a position at the US Environmental Protection Agency. Roger had a very active social life. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Chinese Hua Lien Association. He also founded the Friends of Mauritius Association in Virginia and became its first president. Fond of connecting with people and developing long lasting friendships, Roger and Amy loved to host and entertain guests to culinary feasts in their welcoming home. After his retirement, he particularly enjoyed gatherings with the local homebrewing club and going to tastings and various cultural events. He always made time for his great love of ballroom dancing. His Chinese Zodiac sign was the rat, which is lauded as the first of all animals to appear in front of the Jade Emperor when summoned. Rats are said to be charming, industrious, talkative, and quick-witted. Anyone who had the good fortune of meeting Roger can attest that he wonderfully embodied all these qualities. Viewing will be held on Wednesday January 7, 2015 from 5 pm to 6 pm at Advent Funeral Services, 7211 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. A Funeral Service will follow from 6 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest donations to organizations that made a difference in his later years: St Jude Children Research Hospital https://shop.stjude.org/GiftCatalog/donation.do?cID=14262&pID=24671 Foundation Fighting Blindness http://www.blindness.org/donate
