Obituary of James Richard Naughton

Long-time resident of McLean, VA, James (Jim) was born March 18, 1925 in Sioux City, Iowa. He passed away on March 10, 2011 from a cerebral hemorrhage with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Florence (Davenport) Naughton and his brothers John D., William K., Gordon K., and John S. Naughton. Jim served in the U.S. Army 100th Infantry Division during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for his military service. After the war, while attending Morningside College and earning his law degree at Drake University, he operated his family’s 230-acre farm in Iowa. He was an attorney, CPA, and Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly 30 years where he was known as the “Father of the Inspector General Act.” He was a member of the DC, Virginia and Iowa Bars, the Association of Government Accountants, and a member of the National Press Club for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Yolanda (Cortinovis) Naughton, son James Naughton, Jr. of Vienna, VA, daughter Jennifer Naughton of Arlington, VA, daughter-in-law Deirdre (Hannon) Naughton, grandson Jayden Naughton, several nephews and nieces, brother and sisters-in-law, and his pal, Solstie, the family dog. He was an honest man from Iowa, dedicated to public service, who loved his family and country. He will be remembered by family and friends as an intelligent, humble, and gentle soul from the heartland who loved to tell stories. He also had a smile that could light up the room. Funeral services: March 19th, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, VA. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a future date.
