Obituary of Amy Ostermeier

Amy Allison Ostermeier, formerly of Knoxville, TN, died September 2, 2011, at home surrounded by loved ones in Alexandria, Va. She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather Paul Jeffries and paternal grandparents Norma and Delmar Ostermeier. She is survived by husband Jim Rosenberg and daughter Kira Mae of Alexandria; parents David and Sally Ostermeier of Knoxville, TN; brother Eric Ostermeier (Pamela) and nephew Benjamin of Santiago, Chile and Grandmother Mildred Jeffries, Aunts Paula Borland and Corinne O Baker, cousins Jeffry Borland, David Dyroff Jr., Daniel Dyroff and Debbie Koski and multiple second cousins in Illinois, Missouri, and Maryland. Amy attended Jakarta International School, Jakarta, Indonesia, and graduated from Bearden High School in Knoxville in 1994. She attended Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, graduating with a B.S. in Political Science in 1998. Following graduation she spent a year in Accra, Ghana, Africa, where she worked with UNICEF. In 2003 she graduated with a Masters of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and was appointed a Presidential Management Fellow by the U.S. government. She was employed by the U.S. Department of State as a Senior Human Rights Officer and Deputy Director in the Office of Human Rights, Humanitarian, and Social Affairs. Her family wishes to thank the Oncology Center at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, in particular Ross Donehower, M.D., and staff for outstanding treatment and compassionate care. Amy faced her illness and death with the grace, courage, and dignity with which she lived her life. A service celebrating her life will be held in the Washington DC suburb of Rockville, MD, at the Rockville Unitarian Universalist Church (301-762-7666) at 2:30 p.m. on September 17th.
