To the Family of Matt Sweet, I just heard about the passing of Matt Sweet. I served with Matt during Desert Storm. My sincere sympathies are with with you all. Matt made me laugh so many times I could not count them. He was a very brave Marine as we crossed through the mine fields and on to Kuwait in 1991. After the war was over I took Matt with me to play golf in the desert at ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia. We bought 4 cans of beer in Bahrain for $7. each which was off limits but we enjoyed every drop after a few months of no alcohol during the war.
I just read the e-mail a few moments ago. I would have gone to the funeral as I live in Annandale but in lieu of that I want you all to know that Matt was a real hero and a great Marine and a very comic and witty friend.
God Bless,
Jim Leslie

Once when we were freshmen some upper classman were pickng on a kid. Matt stepped up and confronted the bullies telling them to knock it off. They did. It was simply the right thing to do and Matt knew it. I Am sad to hear he will not be around to help protect us. He was truly a good person.

Matt was one of my first boyfriends in 7th. I remember meeting him at my first dance and we danced together all night. Later on, when my engagement got announced in the Towne Courier (local East Lansing paper) his mother, Beverly, called my Mom to let her know that Matt was a 3rd cousin of my fiance & to relate her congratulations. It was nice running into Matt at the family reunions during the time I was married to his cousin. Matt was a very sweet kid who grew into a very nice man. From what I see posted here & in his tribute, he apparently became a very well loved, well respected & wonderful husband, father & member of his community. He will be missed.

What a wonderful guy! Matt and I shared so many memorable times at East Lansing High School and at each others homes during our teen aged years. He had a gentle manner and an infectious smile. I will so miss seeing him at our next reunion.
Love and prayers to all of his family tonight.

We were very saddened to read about Matt’s death in the Lansing State Journal. Even in our sadness we share in your hope of eternal life with Jesus, our Savior, in heaven. We know Matt shared that Christian faith and was an excellent example for all of us. May the Lord be with you as you travel through this journey of sorrow, yet with joy remember and celebrate Matt’s life.
Your friends in Lansing Michigan, Wally and Chris Jung

As Matt’s HS counselor, I remember him as a very dedicated & talented young man. Growing up in East Lansing, MI in the late 60’s-early 70’s was an anti-military challenge. He moved forward with his positive beliefs despite seeing antiwar protests on MSU campus & in our HS. He achieved so much after all this that surely can be passed forward in his extended family.

Our condolences to the Sweet family. We have been blessed to be neighbors and friends for almost 15 years. Matt was one of those rare people that made you feel welcome regardless of the situation. He always made those around him the center of attention, and happy that you were there. He is in a better place , and one can only hope that you will get to see him again. Our prayers are with him and his family.

I played football with “Toot” in HS and I always admired his determination and stamina. He played like he was 10 feet tall because his heart was a big as a house. His spirit has lived in me for close to 40 years and it won’t die with his temporal body. God’s blessing on his family and friends.
