Obituary of Alan Ward Richey, MD

Alan W. Richey, a specialist in internal medicine in Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years, died at his home in Arlington surrounded by his family on January 2, 2023. Born in Asmara, Eritrea on November 18, 1956 to the late Earl Richey and Katherine Ward, Dr. Richey grew up in Uganda, Japan, and Falls Church, Virginia.

After graduating from Duke University and then Georgetown University School of Medicine (1983), Dr. Richey practiced internal medicine in Northern Virginia before retiring from Inova Health System in 2022. Dr. Richey loved the practice of medicine and caring for his patients over the many decades of service to his community.

The only time there was tension in his home was when Duke and Georgetown (the alma mater of his wife and daughter) were both in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Dr. Richey is survived by his wife Jean Brown, his daughter Greer Richey, two sisters, Elizabeth Beck and Susan Gaylord, and 16 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the name of Dr. Richey to the Inova Schar Cancer Research Institute or the African Wildlife Foundation.

The funeral for Dr. Richey will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, followed by the burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Falls Church.
