Obituary of Rosann Catherine Byrnes
On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, Rosann Catherine Byrnes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister passed away at the age of 63 at Fairfax Hospital. She was surrounded by her family as she died peacefully and pain free.
Rosann, or also known as Rodi to many others, battled esophageal cancer after being diagnosed in late 2020. At the time of her death, she was cancer free but the cancer side effects led her to many other health complications. She suffered from COPD and ultimately it caused her life to end early. Her COPD caused her much suffering and she fought hard until the end to breathe. Thankfully God graced her last breath peaceful and effortless.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Byrnes; her first husband, James Slahetka; their three children, Nicholas (Whitney) Slahetka, Michael (Maria) Slahetka, and daughter Brittany (Geoff) Gotliffe; grandchildren Sophia (3), Logan (2), Aiden (2), Natalie (1), Luke (1), and Brendan (2 months); and brother, G Gula.
Her most proud recognition was being called “Gammy” to her 6 beautiful grandchildren.
She was an irreplaceable friend to many and will be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and strong spirit. Her fierce personality and little stature earned her the phrase “pit-bull in a poodle’s body.” She had a gift of giving great advice and was a true inspiration to all. Another one of her greatest achievements was overcoming her addiction to alcohol and reached 12 years of sobriety, demonstrating that she was a pillar of strength.
She will be missed and remembered by many. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, June 10th at 10AM at The Church of Nativity, Burke, VA. A reception to follow immediately at Burke Lake Park. Her cremation wish has been honored. A full streaming service can be provided to extended family and friends unable to attend.
