Obituary of Jorge Hazera
JORGE LUIS HAZERA SMITH (Age 67)
Born November 29, 1953, in Washington, DC, Jorge Luis was one of six children born to Jorge Hazera Gutierrez y Ross, a Costa Rican diplomat, and Barbara Smith McDonough, a navy brat raised in Puerto Rico during WWII. Jorge graduated from Country Day School High School in San Jose, Costa Rica, in 1971, continued studies at the University of Costa Rica until 1976 and completed a Masters in Economics at George Mason Universityin 1980. Following graduation, he began a 40-year career as an international economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and married Belkis Safyurtlu Hazera, his classmate. Jorge and Belkis made their home in Arlington, Virginia, and were blessed with two sons, Fransisco Mahmut and Eduardo Iskender. Jorge’s favorite pastimes were distance running, gardening, restoring their family’s 1920s home, coaching and refereeing soccer, vacationing in Cape Hatteras and Costa Rica, and motorcycling in Appalachia.
Jorge is survived by his wife, sons, daughter-in-law Allison Maddux, twin grandsons, Mateo and Marino, six siblings, and a multitude of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
There will be a private funeral at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, where he will be interred along side his mother and father.
