Patrick Ighavongbe

Obituary of Patrick Osarhiemen Ighavongbe

Mr. Patrick Osarhiemen Ighavongbe was born on 23 November 1947 at Evboesi Village, Edo State, Nigeria. He was the youngest of three siblings born to Mr. Ighavongbe Okunzuwa and Mrs. Okunsogie Ighavongbe.

Mr. Patrick married his only wife Mrs. Grace Ighavongbe, née Iduoze on 26 February 1967. In 1968, he and his wife relocated to Kaduna State, Nigeria where they raised 10 children (six males & four females).

Mr. Patrick was a gifted Mathematician with a good memory for retaining learned information. He saw education as a strong driver for upward social mobility and believed very strongly in the power of education to transform lives. It was his view that age should never be a barrier to learning, particularly for individuals with the innate ability to thrive academically. Mr. Patrick exemplified his beliefs by achieving his tertiary qualifications at the ‘ripe old age’ of 57 years. He passed down his contagious enthusiasm for learning to his children, who all have at least one college degree each.

In his parenting style, Mr. Patrick adopted a relational/authoritative philosophy. His approach was distinguished by him putting high pressure on his children around expectations and standards, and this he did within a climate of high support and nurture. To his children, Mr. Patrick was ‘firm but always fair’ in his approach. They witness that his parenting style worked best for them. Mr. Patrick taught his children to know their limits, while also reassuring them that he would always be with them to help them solve problems whenever they got themselves into a mess.

Mr. Patrick’s ethos and philosophy was built on sincerity and a deep sense of honesty and fairness and these values he instilled in his children. The world has lost a legend but his legend lives on through his children and grandchildren.

Education Mr. Patrick attended the Catholic Primary School, Evboesi where he graduated in 1957. He then attended Iguodala Secondary Modern School, Benin City where he graduated in 1961. In 1967, he qualified as a Telecommunications Technician, obtaining his City and Guilds qualification from GES Technical College Warri, Delta State. In 2004, he graduated from Kaduna Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical Engineering.  Career Mr. Patrick worked at United Textiles, Kaduna State from 1969 to 1981 when he joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC). He was in employment with the NNPC until his retirement in 2004.

In addition, Mr. Patrick was also an astute entrepreneur, with him and his wife founding and managing several businesses over the years.

Post retirement Upon retirement, Mr. Patrick and his wife spent some time in the United Kingdom (UK), visiting children and grandchildren. Together with his wife, Mr. Patrick emigrated to settle permanently in the United States in 2009. He was naturalized as a citizen of the United States in 2014 and lived happily ever after with his eldest son, daughter and eight grandchildren until the 12th December 2020 when he was called to rest in the Lord.
