I am so sorry to learn of Dr. O'Leary's passing. My on-campus job as a CUA undergrad from 1983-87 was in the Politics Dept.,when Dr. O'Leary was Chairman. I recall many times in late the afternoon when he would sit around and chat with us -- me Mrs. Dizon and Mrs. Fields. I miss those times and always think of them whenever I see Marist Hall. RIP.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Dr. O'Leary was a great man, professor and mentor. I first met him in 1999 when I took over as President of the Foreign Affairs Club which he advised. He was one of the first professors who took a genuine interest in my education and even recommended that I take his graduate level class when I was only a sophomore. As he signed papers for the club, he would point out the latest pictures of his daughters or show off a piece of artwork that they had done; then, he would pivot the conversation to a book that he thought I should read. Studying and just talking with Dr. O'Leary brought me to the area of study to which I am returning after a long hiatus -- international development. I actually ended a paper for him saying that we should revisit the topic in 20 years and that is what I am doing. I consider myself lucky to have gotten the opportunity to interact with Dr. O'Leary and any future success in academia that I have can most certainly point back to his mentorship.

I am sorry to learn of Jim's passing. I met him in the early 70s when we were both working at USIA. He was going to school and we would often get together to watch TV and I would cook us dinner (he didn't have much money back in those days so we couldn't go out). He once escorted me to a dance sponsored by USIA and I saved this photo all these years. He was a positive influence in my life. I only wished I had kept in touch as I stayed in the area working at the State Department. May he Rest In Peace. Loretta Antonini Phillips

I am so sorry to hear about Jim's death. Our family has many wonderful memories of going on vacation to Martha's Vineyard, great family BBQs, and the arrival of our children. We have not seen a lot of Jim lately, but he ill be missed.

I was so sad to hear about Jim’s passing. I was his teaching assistant for 3 years in a row at Catholic University and we would spend a lot of time in his office chatting. We were both born in Berkeley CA at Alta Bates Hospital and he loved to talk about his childhood in California. He always spoke glowingly about his daughters and grandchild. I am so very sorry for your loss.
