Obituary of Barry Sanford Tindall

Barry Sanford Tindall passed away May 10, 2020 at his home in Falls Church, VA surrounded by his family. His passing followed a year-long battle after heart surgery. He was born on June 29, 1939 in Edinburg, New Jersey, the son of Malcolm and Dorothy (Croshaw) Tindall.

 

Barry served in the United States Air Force from 1957-1961 with posts at Elgin AFB in Florida and RAF Woodbridge in England. He received an associate degree from Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences in forestry in 1963. Barry earned a BS in Park and Recreation Administration from North Carolina State University in 1967 and later, his MA in Urban and Regional Planning at George Washington University in 1973. Barry served for over 30 years as the Director of Public Policy for the National Recreation and Park Association. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family, birding, gardening, traveling, and volunteering. He never missed an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors.

 

Barry dedicated his life to service, both personally and professionally. He was a dedicated member of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, where he was actively involved in the church’s program to feed and clothe homeless adults. He spent most Sundays serving food and sharing fellowship with the less fortunate. He also served as a volunteer tutor to young students in the Washington, DC public school system. Barry’s love of gardening followed him into retirement where he worked at Merrifield Garden Center for several years. He loved sharing his knowledge of horticulture and landscaping with his customers.

 

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Barry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sara Garver Tindall; daughter Melissa Tindall Hausch (Ty) and son David Allan Tindall (Jennifer); granddaughters Carey and Sara Oakes and grandsons William and Ryan Tindall; sister Marilyn Bergen (Boyd) and brother Wayne Tindall; several nieces and nephews and countless friends. Barry is preceded in death by his parents Malcolm and Dorothy Tindall, brother Bruce Tindall, and sister Patricia Tantum (Stanley).

 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC.
