Obituary of Maureen Dorothy Kenny

Maureen Dorothy Kenny October 1, 1933 – August 24, 2019 Born in New York City, Maureen was the oldest child of Grace and James Kenny. After moving several times during World War II, the family settled in Belle Harbor, NY, where Maureen completed grammar school and high school. In 1955, she graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent with a BS in Nursing. Her early years as a nurse were spent in pediatrics at Kings County Hospital (Brooklyn), DC General Hospital, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children (Dublin), Arlington Hospital, and the former Junior Village. It was during her years at Our Lady’s Hospital that she connected with family members in Ireland, who opened their homes and hearts to her, building bridges across the generations and across the sea. Maureen served as a public health nurse in the Peace Corps (India 21) from 1965 to 1966. In the early 1970s she became a nurse practitioner at the District of Columbia’s Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in Lorton, VA. Throughout all her years as a nurse, she cared for her patients with compassion, care, intelligence, and conscientiousness. She volunteered her time with several different causes throughout the Washington area, including the Zacchaeus Clinic. She extended that same sense of caring to her family as well, lending her comforting presence to all generations in times of need. She attended every graduation, funeral, wedding, and baptism she possibly could. She regaled us with superbly told family stories. On Monday, September 9 at 10 AM, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 3305 Glen Carlyn Road, Falls Church VA 22041. Inurnment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla NY to follow. There will also be a memorial service at the Goodwin House, Bailey’s Crossroads, on Sunday November 10 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent for Parkinson’s research at the Michael J. Fox Foundation at https://www.michaeljfox.org/our-promise (or by phone 1-800-708-7644).
