Obituary of Nancy M. Flynn

Nancy Marie Flynn of Falls Church, VA, age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning August 25, 2019. Nancy had several chronic health issues prior to her death. She was born on August 3, 1947, in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of C.L. “Bud” and Margrete (Valentine) Flynn. Nancy graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.A. degree, magna cum laude, in political science and secondary education. Nancy continued her education at the University of Michigan where she earned her M.A. in political science. Nancy began her career with the Federal government in 1970 as a Wage and Hour investigator with the United States Department of Labor in Detroit, Michigan, enforcing the Fair Labor Standards Act as well as the Equal Pay and Age Discrimination and Employment Acts. Nancy’s career with the Department of Labor took her to Chicago, Illinois, where she served as the Deputy Assistant Regional Administrator for the Chicago Region and in November 1982, to Washington, D.C., where she was Director of the Division of Minimum Wage and Hour Standards in the National Office. In 1987, Nancy was appointed to the Senior Executive Service as Assistant Administrator for Program Operations in the Wage and Hour Division, and in 1988, she was appointed to Deputy Administrator, the highest career position in the Agency. She was the first woman to serve as Wage and Hour Deputy Administrator, and the first woman to advance from an entry level Wage and Hour investigator to the Senior Executive Service. Nancy retired from Federal service in October 2012 after 42 years with the Department of Labor. Nancy was active in the University of Michigan Club of Washington, D.C. and also served on the Board of Directors of the Senior Executives Association. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Michael Leon Flynn and Thomas Flynn. Nancy is survived by her brother, Kevin Flynn (Kelly Andrews Flynn) and sister, LeeAnn Flynn Hall; seven nieces and nephews: Brooke (Scott) Schultz, Jennifer (Jared) Stull, Kelley Flynn, Michael Thomas Flynn, Jacob Flynn, Madelyn Flynn and Samantha Hall; seven great nieces and nephews: Andrew Taylor, Addison Antcliff, Luella Antcliff, Mackenzie Stull, Cooper Stull, Vivienne Schultz and Alexandra Schultz There will be a service of interment in Kalamazoo, Michigan at a future date.
