Lucious “Lucky” George Walters, Jr. Lucky was born as Lucious George Walters, Jr. on November 14, 1947 in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia to parents Lucious Sr. and Mary Emma Walters. Lucky departed this life during the early morning of Wednesday September 4, 2019 at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC after a long illness related to complications from his military service‑connected disabilities. Lucky attended schools in the District of Columbia Public School System where he completed and graduated from Coolidge High School. He later attended Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland during the mid‑1970s where he studied Computer Science. Lucky also attended the former TESST Electronic Institute where he studied local area networking of servers and systems confirmation and management. Lucky maintained a lifelong interest in all things about computer science and information technology. Lucky worked for the U.S. Postal Service during the 1960s until he was drafted into the U.S. Armed Forces in October 1967. Following his induction into the Armed Forces, Lucky served in the Fourth United States Army from November 17, 1967 through November 14, 1969. Lucky was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma after completing his basic training, and then he entered infantry combat in the Vietnam theater. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, Lucky continued service in the U.S. Army Reserves until November 16, 1973. For his honorable military service and direct support of the Republic of Vietnam campaign, the U.S. Army recognized Lucky’s service by awarding him the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with ‘60 Device Bar, in addition to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Qualification Badge. Lucky was the go-to guru for anything electronic and mechanical. Across the span of changes in computing and personal computers, Lucky engaged in his favorite hobby of custom-building personal computer systems for friends, family, and as a side venture for those who reached out to him. Lucky also maintained a lifelong interest in all things about cars, including tinkering with old school cars back in the day and repairing not only his own cars, but also his wife Lenise’s cars well before the digital age. He enjoyed hanging out on weekends at movie theaters with grandson Joseph, and he spent time watching hours and hours of science fiction and horror movies. For a time, Lucky even played guitar sessions with a band during his younger days. Lucky remained a long-time fan of Major League Baseball and National Football League games, in particular attending and watching the Washington Nationals, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Redskin games. He also indulged in keeping with both professional and college basketball games and both professional boxing and kick-boxing matches, often times watching the games and matches well into the night and waking up later to replay them. Lucky transitioned from this life during the coming 40th anniversary of his marriage on December 29, 1979 to his surviving wife and companion Lenise Smith-Walters. Lucky leaves behind in this life other loved ones who cherished his memory and company, including his son Michael Walters (LaJuan Morant-Walters), daughter Yolanda Johnson (Darryll), and step-daughter Yolanda Smith Morris (Brian Morris); 11 grandchildren who include the Walters siblings Mishel, Mia, Mishca, Michael Jr., Mila, Miguel and Malia, the Johnson siblings Aniya and Daija, and the Smith/Morris siblings Joseph Smith and Raymond Morris. He also leaves behind in this life his brother Donald Walters and sister-in-law Phyllis Walters, and his brother Robert Walters and sister-in-law Rita Walters; his nieces and nephews Donald Walters II, Romane Walters, Craig Walters, and Teria Walters; his father-in-law Melvin Smith Sr.; the Smith brothers- and sisters-in law Ronald, Gerald (Rosalyn), Sherrie, Sandra, Angela Smith-Young (Anthony Young), and Ina; and a host of cousins, extended family, friends, and acquaintances with whom he crossed paths during the journey of his life. Lucky was preceded in death by his father Lucious George Walters, Sr. (1916-1994), a World War II Veteran who retired from the United States Navy, and his mother Mary Emma (Urquhart) Walters (1920-1981), his father’s wife and companion. Lucky was also preceded in death by his favorite cousin Abel Algernon Copeland (1949-2010), his mother-in-law Shirley Ann (Davis) Smith (1938-1989), brother-in-law Melvin Smith, Jr. (1956-1986), and sister-in-law Carolyn Ann Smith (1957-1997).
