Obituary of Robert Lyles

Robert Hallie Lyles, Episcopal Priest The Reverend Robert H. Lyles, 80, who served as Vicar and Rector of Saint Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, Annandale from September 1963 until his retirement in July of 1999, died Saturday, March 26th at Goodwin House, Alexandria. Mr. Lyles was twice a regional dean for the Diocese of Virginia. He served on the Board of Missions in the 1960’s and was also an Executive Board member. Mr. Lyles was a field education supervisor for the Virginia Theological Seminary from 1963 until 1997. He had been a supervisor for the Middle Atlantic Training Program, a multi-diocesan internship for seminarians, and served as its President until 1986. He was one of the founding members of the Annandale Christian Community for Action and remained active in its work until his retirement. The Reverend Mr. Lyles was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. After graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1957, he served his deaconate at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church until June of 1958. He was Rector of Trinity Parish in Louisa County, Virginia until leaving in 1963 to come to St. Barnabas’ in Annandale. Survivors include his wife, Joy Sheelor Lyles, whom he married in 1956 and who lives in Alexandria, and his two children, Linda Lyles Corn of Stafford, Virginia and Thomas Clifton Lyles of Alexandria, as well as a loving extended family. A memorial service and burial will be held at Saint Barnabas’ Episcopal Church in Annandale at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 1st. A service celebrating his life will be held at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria on Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Barnabas’ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, to the Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, or to the Goodwin House Fellowship Fund.
